LA96C is one of 16 former NIKE Missile Radar/Control Site built to defend Los Angeles from a nuclear attack from Soviet bombers. It was an active battery from 1956-1968. It was decommissioned when the Soviets developed Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles, which traveled so fast and high that NIKE missiles became useless as a means of defense.
The site has been partially restored and is now a public park, accessible along an unpaved section of Mulholland drive. The former radar tower is now a popular location for views of the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angels basin, the Santa Monica Mountains and western sunsets.
