American Toad, Bufo americanus, calling. He has the distinction of being the first calling toad I've managed to photograph, or actually even be this close to. He's also the first toad I've found this year.
I believe a calling peeper is more deafening than a toad at close range, but there was something hypnotic and trancelike about an american toads trill that made it hard to concentrate.
