Before the fires back in 2006SEP17 I hiked up and around the Bowden Spur Rd which cuts through the Kinglake area up from Hurstrbridge, Arthurs Creek and Strathewen. The shots here are before the fire came through. This particular image is from the other side of Bowden Spur Rd from Kinglake side of the hill.

Water & fuel logistics

While sister & brother have been up 2/3 times now I've been waiting back. This is going to be a long OP and stamina is required. I'm pretty much expecting burn-out soon. So I'm starting to gear up and get some objectives up and running every week. This week it's water and fuel.

Working on logistics today. Problems are water & fuel. Franks the 63,000 litre tank is shot (plastic inner liner for galvanised iron tank melted to waterline) so I got on the horn to brother and we decided 2/3 IBL 1000 tanks might do the job. One stays at home, the other on the truck and refills are done in Whittelsea. Problem IBL may be clean but will have to be flushed. Also there's the problem of petrol. The generators chewing 3L/hour of petrol. Need a solution to store bulk fuel safely. Really want someway of storing over 20L preferrably 200L of fuel and some way of metering it out for the generator. 5 hours/day of use means 15L of fuel and daily refills.

Got on the horn to old mate Kev. I've known Kev since I was about 4. Over the day he organised to get not only a petrol trolley (tank on wheels) but a Pelecon (like an IBL but with sanitary plastic liner like a wine cask that allows drinking water to be transferred) and petrol powered water pump. That means in 24Hrs we have a potential solution to water. At the moment there is no water for washing, showers etc. Only drinking water in bottles. Having a permanent tank means you can pump stuff around the house, to 20L bottles or washing machine. The pumps screwed, the gutters are screwed and a fed funded water tank while good in the medium term is ideal we need water now. Next prob is transporting it, testing it.

Tomorrow, tools & thinking about septic tank which is also stuffed.

Hey K, got your ph message, you're fast.

1 x petrol water pump

1 x drum trolley for petrol

1 x water tank (as discussed on phone)

Now I rang T, she has 2 "shultz" on order. She really wants to order

from you. What is the going rate for these tanks, Trace mentions they

are being charged at 250 in a cage. Can you quote her for these?

Questions:

==========

Q What's the petrol drum trolley capacity. I've read the rationing is

around 20L per refill?

Andy mentioned the P's are good for one-off storage due to the

bladders. Here's the problem:

a) Permanent store of water at home (1 container) that's filled with

water & drawn from. At some time in the future this could be changed to

a larger more permanent water tank sourced by funds from gov.

b) Transportable store of water that can be taken to Whittlesea and

filled then transferred to permanent tank. Andy mentioned the

inner-linings are 1 use (trouble with refills). Is there any way to

optomise this without having to continually repurchase liners?

Which tanks work better for storage and which for transport?

Which tanks are suitable for drinking water?

Delivery:

=========

Asked T on delivery she reckons as soon as convenient delivered to

James address (note to myself find this) and they'll drive the thing to

the Whittlesea checkpoint and up to KLW.

some time later

Hi K,

T is ordering the 'shultz'. The location of the DOP. Do you want me to meet you at your work to help load, secure & direct? Let us know today and I can be at address.

Other stuff.

================

Yet to contact Dad to organise small shed for storage & explain setup &

protection kit (S3 masking, gloves, overalls) and organising chainsaw.

Phone is down.

some time later

Hi T, A

Haven't got in contact with Dad (phone switched off) so I'll summarise

what is going on and I designate A to act as liason with Dad to clear

information and be contact with info (if you think this is a good idea -

let me know of alternatives?).

- Have organised delivery of

2 x Plastic bladder 1000L tanks

2 x crates per tank

2 x valves, 1 per tank

1 x petrol water pump (check for fittings)

- T is ordering 1000L ruggedised tank

They should be man handable and no larger than the palette size and

around 50Kg in weight and collapsed dimensions. How it could be organised is to have 2 x bladder tanks as permanent

water storage at house on 2 x crates for valve access. Water pump to

pump water to other areas. A I talked to K and he reckons if you

don't empty the tanks the membranes store for a long time. Kev also said

he can secure more membranes as required.

I've organised for K to deliver to DOP at an unspecified time so far. I'll be organising to meet Kev at his work to help him load, direct. This means the stuff is ready to deliver as we can.

TODO

Im chasing a 44gal for pump petrol storage plus carry tank that allows

for petrol storage. This is on hold as K is still provisionally

searching. The alternative is to contact R.

The next objective is a small shed with potentially concrete floor for

storage of tools and sundry kit. This is a temporary measure for both

practical & psychological reasons. Busy people don't dwell. I'm thinking

how to get a shed (scrounge before thinking of purchasing) any ideas?

some time later

> I have issue with the petrol water pump; I have had one of my guys

> open it up as it appears to have seized.

Thats cool. Rang Dad now and he has 2 of them that survived. So you can

scrub that as a requirement. So no pump electric or petrol is confirmed

needed.

- 2 ultras (IBCs) only 88kg.

- 4 wooden pallets for them to sit for gravity discharge

- 1 x length of hose with kamlok fitting

- 2 ballvalves

- 10 liners for Ultras

Excellent, your've excelled. Give me a time post 0900/1000 that I can

meet you to help load/direct if you want. I'll then organise tomorrow to

have J unload the kit at the DOP. When I asked Dad over the details

this is pretty much what is required now.

They are getting about 100L/day from next door - 100m who have a bit of

water in their tanks. Getting in this capacity will achieve objective

one which is a) Water b) sanitation.
