Rizal Shrine (Calamba, Laguna)

The original house was probably built around 1848 and one of Calamba's first bahay na bato. Dr. Jose Rizal who would later become the Philippines' national hero was born here in 1861. The house was later sold when Rizal's parents, prosecuted by the Spanish colonial authorthies, fled Calamba. It was destroyed during World War II, brought back by the Philippine government after the war, rebuilt under the supervision of National Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil and mostly through funds donated by Filipino school children, and inaugurated as a shrine in 1950. And this year for whatever reason, the National Historical Institute had it painted with a yucky green.
