"Beaker Head Challenge: 3018 - Louis Riel School Science 8-1

When given the topic of the world in 3018, many students first thoughts were futuristic technology, for example: flying cars, robots and advanced spaceships. But there were also many thoughts that our world will be a wasteland in the future, with nothing but trash everywhere. We thought of many ideas for our final tapigami sculpture like a pill with items inside, or a newspaper with news on what's happening or stuff popping out of it. The final idea that ended up winning the most student votes was a spaceship. We incorporated other ideas with it like junk you would find in space and future weapons.

Getting to that final idea was not simple either, some students argued that spaceships already exist, and weren't futuristic enough. The students that chose the spaceship said that it represents the evolution of humans. According to World Population Growth in the past 100 years, our world population has increased from 1.5 to 6.1 billion people. If we keep increasing at this rate, humans will overpopulate quickly which would lead us to colonize on other planets. As many scientist have stated, including Stephen Hawking, this will be a necessary movement in order to keep the human race thriving. Around the spaceships, students who disagree with the idea would put what they feel best represents the future. We called that space junk. Many students wanted futuristic weapons as they feel that better represents the future. They will have them around the spaceship.

When it came to making the robot, students split themselves into 2 groups. It was based off of who wanted to do what, but it was still split evenly. Many people in our class wanted to help in the building process so we ended up have many smaller groups working on space junk and one group working on the spaceship. A student took the time to make a design that we used as our diagram. Throughout the week we had to simplify our plan due to time restraints. Instead of making the space junk items we expect to see in the future, they used balls of rolled masking tape, attempting to make it look like actual trash. Some made a few weapons but not many. The other group making the spaceship is planning to make it shoot bullets. Our end product and the journey to it was quite satisfactory.
