Approaching Kenmore Square, at about the 25-mile (40 km) mark of the Boston Marathon route. The famous Citgo sign looks down on the square as it normally is. On Marathon Monday (Patriots' Day) it's anything but.
Around 2:00 PM that day, about 35,000 Red Sox fans will pour out of nearby Fenway Park (from a game that starts at 11:00 AM) to join the thousands of others already lining Beacon Street -- above -- and both sides of the square to see the first runners come through. I used to work in one of the buildings below the Citgo sign. Getting to the subway to go home that day was always a battle.
