Radio Frequency Cavity

Radio-frequency cavity area of the storage ring of the Advanced Light Source at the E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. As it emits synchrotron light, the electron beam loses energy, which must be replaced if the beam is to continue circulating in the storage ring. The lost energy is put back into the beam by radio-frequency (RF) cavities, such as the copper chamber in the right center of this photograph. In this way, the beam can circulate for many hours before it gradually decays due to collisions between electrons and electrons and residual gas molecules in the vacuum chamber.
