Jockey Hayley Turner with City of London Academy Southwark at Lingfield Park
Thursday 26 February 2015, London, UK: The UK’s leading female jockey Hayley Turner took a group of Year 9 pupils from the City of London Academy in Southwark around the world-famous Lingfield Park Racecourse as part of her work for sport for development charity, Active Communities Network.
Ahead of exciting further developments relating to Hayley and her charity work at the world famous Oval Cricket Ground in London, the Nottinghamshire-born jockey took the group around areas normally reserved solely for jockeys and British Horseracing Association staff at the Surrey racecourse.
The group received an in-depth, guided tour from Hayley herself, visiting the changing room with one young pupil even dressed in the gear of jockeys, before being weighed.
A quick talk through and visit to the Broadcast Office and Stewards Room then followed before the group were taken onto the different Lingfield racecourses by the Racecourse Estates Manager, learning about all the hard work and technical aspects of maintaining and running a working year-round racecourse which they then had a chance to race on, albeit on foot, on the all-weather track, with Hayley running barefooted ahead to act as the finish line steward!
The pupils then went and saw the horses arriving at the racecourse and following lunch, grilled Hayley with an in-depth question and answer session.
After seeing the horses in the parade ring they watched the 2:10 race with Hayley herself talking them through the technicalities of the ride. The group then met the winning rider, Ryan Moore, on the American horse ‘Rain, Wind and Fire’ and formed the presentation group on the podium.
