I took a blacksmithing class once and one of the projects was to make a scroll. You heat the end of a piece of iron to red hot in the forge and use the pointed tip of the anvil to shape it into a circular design.
Much like making a box in woodworking, sewing a pillow, or frying an egg in the kitchen, it is one of the basics forms of iron work. It looks simple (key word looks) but takes a whole lot of skill and finesse. Needless to say, I was blown away by the artistry found walking the streets of Charleston. Beautiful and intricate wrought iron gates set in the historic facades. These gates were also flanked by gas lamps which added to the romance a bit.
