Helophilus hybridus (m)

A male marsh tiger hoverfly (Steve Falk) or woolly-tailed marsh fly (iNat) on ragwort in Chester Zoo Nature Reserve.

This is one of three UK species in the Helophilus genus commonly called 'footballers' because of their striped thorax and is less common than the sun fly (Helophilus pendulus). It can be identified by its mostly dark hind tibia, lack of a complete black band across the middle of the back and dusting all the way up to the ocellae on the haed.
