A shot taken as the train pulled off after stopping before crossing the trestle bridge over the Waimakairi River.
It was taken from an observation car like the one immediately behind the locomotives. These are totally open and crowded with jostling photographers - something I can't see being allowed in the UK!
As we left the train at Arthur's Pass three more of these locomotives were coupled to the rear of the train to deal with the steep gradient to the west coast. This includes the Otira Tunnel that is almost 9km long. They were closing the open observation cars in preparation for this.
