Janus 0-6-0 twin engine diesel electric no 38, bult by the Yorkshire engine co. of Sheffield, works no.2798 of 1961 sits stabled by the weighbridge at the Stocksbridge steel mill above Sheffield on Easter Saturday, April the 8th 2023. This loco shunts internal traffic, heated ingots and rolled steel, external traffic having ceased over a year ago.
Stabled nearby was another Janus, an earlier 1959 product to the same design, numbered 33. A look here ten days later saw the mill at work. 38 had disappeared, 33 had been moved and parked again at a similar spot. Rails show good use. I waited almost two hours, nothing came.. Maybe another time.
This place, along with an almost dormant Aldwarke arc furnace and mill is the last user of this successful type.
