This is a stereoview from a larger collection held at Northumberland Archives. The collection, referenced NRO 09703 consists of stereoviews of Northumberland, mostly capturing the landscape of the Alnwick area.
Stereoviews became popular in the mid 1800’s. They create the illusion of depth. When viewed through a stereoscope the viewer can see what appears to be a 3D image. This is achieved through two separate photographs of the same subject being produced, both slightly different from each other. Once placed side by side and viewed by the left and right eye the brain then interprets these as being one image, creating the illusion of depth.
