The Next Generation
These are the eggs of a Large White butterfly (Pieris brassicae).
It is possible to distinguish from our other whites because a large number are all grouped together. Green-veined White (Pieris napi) and Small White (Pieris rapae) respectively lay their eggs either singly or in a much smaller and looser grouping than this.
These eggs will hatch into caterpillars that will then devastate our allotment brassicas (the clue is in the butterfly's scientific name!). They will then pupate to become adult flying Large White butterflies later this summer.
