Deception Island
Our ship rode out an overnight storm in the sheltered waters of Deception Island, South Shetlands, Antarctica. A narrow passage allowed entrance from the open ocean to this flooded volcanic caldera. When we awoke next morning, this spectacular landscape greeted us, including a small Spanish supply vessel that was also present. This was presumably heading for the Spanish/Argentinian base on the island. Sadly the wind was far too strong for any zodiac landing to be attempted here, thereby denying us the dubious pleasure of bathing in antarctic waters. Apparently the idea is to dig a pit in the beach sand and let it fill with sea water warmed by the volcanic activity!
