Tasting Britain
TastingBritain.co.uk - Whisky Live London 2016 @ The Honourable Artillery Company, City Road, London
The very excellent Christopher and Marlena at Paragraph Publishing invited Tasting Britain (again) to come down and see what Whisky Live London (2016) was all about. Obviously we said yes and had the opportunity to discover some more very interesting whiskies, whisky people and decommissioned weaponry all scattered throughout the building.
Like last year, the event itself took place at The Honourable Artillery Company in City Road near Old Street. As far as I can tell, this is essentially a castle/18th century mansion, semi active military installation, events space and museum, all rolled into one (did I miss anything?). You might think that filling a building full of civil war era edged weaponry with people drinking whisky is not a good idea but the type of people who are geeked out on whisky are usually not the kind of people who get rowdy and trash the place.
This year was full of some amazing new discoveries for me - top 3 would be Bombergerâs / Michters Straight Rye/Barrel Strength Straight Rye, Auchentoshanâs delicious Blood Oak and Glen Morayâs 25 year (port cask finish oh yes). Distilled in 1988, the liquid in this one is as old as I am... but so much more sophisticated. Asides from just wandering from booth to booth (which you could spend the whole day doing) thereâs a few other things that you can book for in advance. These include: tutored tastings, chances to meet industry legends and a TON of masterclasses. This year, there was a chance to get a taste/first taste of some unusual and rare expressions - Nikkaâs new 12 year, Bowmore's Mizunara, Teeling Whiskeyâs new 24 year single malt - and plenty more besides! Kids in a candy store I tell ya...
So, to summarise Whisky Live? Once again... an experience that I am morally obliged to recommend to my fellow whisky people (and I assume some of you are reading thisâ¦). Be here next year!
