Origami “Yoga”

I photographed Origami, “Yoga,” which is a male, Brown Pelican doing his afternoon stretches, by the sea with his vibrant temporary breeding plumage at La Jolla Cove, La Jolla, California, USA.

Pelecanus occidentalis

Pelicans are able to twist and turn their necks to extreme angles while preening due to an exceptionally flexible vertebral column, with specialized vertebrae that allow for significant twisting and rotational movement.

I immediately thought to myself, when I was studying this Brown Pelican, I’ve got to try to capture this memory! It reminded me of folding many Origami cranes with my best friend a few years ago for her beloved mother. Origami involves transforming, folding and sculpting techniques from paper. I thought I’ve got a title for this Peli “Yoga” master!
