Education in Rome
Ancient Rome greatly appreciated the knowledge and education of the Greeks. Romans frequently employed Greek philosophers as tutors for their children. In Rome male children of the rich families were well educated by private tutors or in schools. However many of the poor learned to read or write.
Learning in schools was based on fear. Punishment by use of force was encouraged. Children went to school from sunrise to sunset and had to memorize their lessons since they could not have books. Writing was learned in wax tablets and not in parchments or papyruses which were very expensive. Girls from rich families could get an education but only at home.
Children up to 11 or 12 learned to read and write by using wax tablets and styluses. Also they used abaci to learn basic mathematics. Older children would study more advanced topics like public speaking and the writings of great intellects like Cicero.
