Malton Fire Aerial with labels
At 2:55 PM on October 25, 1969, a natural gas explosion changed the Four Corners (intersection of Airport Road & Derry Road) of Malton forever.
The Avronian Restaurant, Langford’s, Malton Hardware, Pat’s Steak on a Bun and Sit N’ Eat were among the businesses that never reopened as these buildings were completely destroyed in the fire. The fire also destroyed the homes of 18 families who lived above these businesses. Nearly 50 parked cars were burnt so badly that metal carcasses were all that remained. - extract from Malton: Farms to Flying by Kathleen A. Hicks pg 210-213 www.mississauga.ca/file/COM/9634_MaltonBook.pdf
Other businesses were disrupted for many months as repairs were done. The “Four Corners” never regained its former vitality.
