Gerber 2008
Overview of the membrane system in Gram negative bacteria with selected membrane proteins. The gray areas represent the lipid bilayers with the outer membrane (OM) and cytoplasmic membrane (CM). Beta-barrel proteins (i.e. BtuB or FhuA) are characteristic for the OM, alpha-helical proteins reside in the CM (e.g. BtuCD or FhuCD). A specific route of solute uptake is represented for vitamin B12 or iron respectively, including integral membrane proteins of known structure.
