w52.31-35 A brace of Old Faithfuls (retired)

Quick snap to test the low-light capabilities of the new used Nikon V1 I just got.

These are all either retired or dead, but I have used them at some point in time so I am going to cheat and qualify them for my 52 cameras project. From right:

w52.31 Panasonic Lumic LC40

My first digital camera. And the first time I heard of an oddly spelt company called "Leica". Bought this on a whim while walking back to the office after lunch one fine day in 2003. Just because our annual bonus had just been banked in.

w52.32 Voigtlander Vito Automatic

I have no idea what the photos look like out of this one. I have only shot 5 frames out of it since buying it -- again on a whim -- when I met the seller of my Pentacon Six TL. Looks really good on the shelf, and feels very good in the hand, too. The wrap's texture feels amazing.

w52.33 Leica RE

One of my Favourite Cameras Of All Time. Great results with 50mm Summicron and Kodak T-Max. Like a well-weighted hammer, it's a sensible tool that gives you nothing more than what you need to do the job in a pleasing way.

If you have been considering a Leica M7, take a look at the RE instead. I had an M7. It doesn't really do anything this RE doesn't with that 50mm Cron. Seriously bargain basement price (WITH the lens!), great looks, ergonomics, heft and balance, with one of the best sounding SLR shutters. Too bad about the electronics roulette.

w52.34 Leica Digilux 2

My first ever Leica. Bought in 2006, also on a whim. Earlier, I kept getting compliments for photos from the LC40 and couldn't understand why. It eventually led me to its "Vario Summicron". I was convinced the lens is possessed. Thus started my Leica Path.

One day I walked into a shop and lo was there a Digilux 2, successor to the LC5, the LC40's older sister. Had to steal to pay for it. But my God was it worth it! Used just this for 2 years. ISO100 colour looks like Portra, while ISO400 B&W looks like T-Max. Brilliant stuff.

w52.35 Praktica Super TL

Years ago, I got addicted to the crack cocaine of optics: Carl Zeiss Jena lenses. Then I started noticing that some photos using these lenses did not look like other photos. The common link was they all used the cameras they were originally designed for.

I started hunting Prakticas and Zenits locally, without much success. One day this unit came up, at my compact SLR benchmark price of RM400 for body + lens. I got it. It stopped working after 2 days. Leh. Now it is a nice retro paperweight.

If the house was burning down would I go back to get it?

Probably not. We'll still have the memories.
