Wellington Police are expecting a large turn-out for this year's Orange Day Parade on Friday 19 June. Last year, the parade attracted 1,000 people and is set to do the same or better this year.

The parade promotes public safety awareness, caution around school patrols and some enjoyable activities for the participating school groups. It is sponsored by Wellington City Council, New Zealand Police and Pak'nSave.

Spectators and participants can enjoy the march, which is led by the Scots College Pipe Band. Vintage Police vehicles, the Fire and Ambulance services and Life Flight will also take part.

The groups will travel down Lambton Quay and Willis Street before arriving at Civic Square, where prizes will be awarded for best dressed group and best school patrol as part of celebrations. A What Now? crew will also be there to film a segment for their show.

"This is also a celebration for school patrollers; the role of school patroller overseas is usually reserved for adults. Here in New Zealand, we give that to senior school children and it's a source of responsibility and pride for them," says Constable Duncan Ashton.

The march will start at 10am, so we expect traffic delays along the parade route until about 10.30am as there will be a rolling road closure. The parade will reach Civic Square at approximately 10.30am on Friday.
