ripening dates :)
A bunch of dates hanging on a palm tree in our hotel garden on Djerba (Tunisia). You can see, that some dates are brown in color, these fruits were already ripe and very sweet :)
Dates are the fruit of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). They are single-seeded berries of variable shape, usually oblong, reaching up to 7 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter, and are brown to black. Dates are traditionally cultivated primarily in the Middle East and North Africa. Over 1,500 varieties of dates are cultivated worldwide. They contain over 50% sugars, fiber, vitamins A, B1, C, and B2, and minerals. The sugars found in dates are simple sugars, meaning they are easily digestible and provide energy quickly after consumption. Moreover, the energy value of dates is higher than that of the same amount of meat or bread. For this reason, they are recommended for those who engage in strenuous physical activity.
