The Casements

It is said that Rockefeller had a frugal streak, and furnished "The Casements" with second-hand items. His daily routine while in Florida went like this: Breakfast at eight followed by a conference with his private secretary, after which he put on his golf clothes which included goggles, gloves, sweater, loose coat, and sports cap with ear coverings. At ten he was driven to the course, where he would meet his friends and perhaps read them a verse of his own composition or join in the singing of a hymn. His favorite golf partner was the pastor of the Ormond Beach Union Church so there was often a reading from the New Testament. If children were present he might join in with them in a game of leapfrog or piggyback. Once the game began he played only eight holes since his car would be waiting at the eighth green to take him home. He was serious about his game but not a fierce competitor.

America's best known plutocrat, Rockefeller first visited Ormond Beach in 1915. He chose Ormond Beach after hiring a group of scientists to locate the most geologically and meterologically stable place in which to live. Ormond Beach has no earthquakes or other geological hazards. In addition, it is rarely hit directly by hurricanes.
