Stand Watie Grave
In addition to turning brother against brother, the American Civil War turned Cherokee and Native Americans against each other, as they chose one side or the other. One of them, brigadier general Stand Watie (1806 – 1871), a Cherokee leader, was the only Native American to attain a general's rank in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.
When Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, he could only surrender the army directly under his command. Other Confederate commanders wanted to continue the struggle, but soon recognized the futility of further fighting, and one by one surrendered to the Union. On June 23, 1865, at Doaksville, Oklahoma, general Stand Watie signed a cease-fire agreement with Union representatives. He was the last Confederate general in the field to stop fighting.
This cemetery is located 28 miles (44 km) southeast of Miami, Oklahoma. I was here on June 7, 2019.
