The Poem is by Minnie Louis Haskins (1875-1957);

it was quoted by George VI in his 1941 Christmas broadcast.

 

The design of this monument recalls the Ark of the Covenant:

 

"Make one cherub on one end

and the second cherub on the other;

make the cherubim of one piece with the cover,

at the two ends."
