Around 1900, in the wake of industrialization and Spain's growing orientation towards a modern Europe, the painter Ignacio Zuloaga strove to preserve the Spanish soul, painting proud bullfighters, flamenco dancers, beggars, witches and a simple rural population in vast withered landscapes, under the scorching sun. In his paintings he combined a realistic style of representation with symbolic elevation.
