Steel and stone triangles
Steel and stone, triangles for strength. Three interesting achievements of human endeavour in this photo. The cathedral relies on traingular forms of stone in compression to achieve great strength in a very tall structure. The Moulton space frame bike uses a complex design of very thin steel tubes in triangular form in both tension and compression to create a remarkably stiff but very lightweight bicycle frame. The bridge designers took a different approach, using large amounts of curved untreated steel plate to create a stable bridge. Yet it still moves a bit - if you stand quietly in the centre you can feel the vibrations from any other footsteps long before you see their plodding feet. The wooden decks look nice but are starting to move around a bit and will need careful maintenance. If that is down to Norfolk County Council I am not optimistic, the other two relatively new footbridges over the Wensum (Novi Sad and Lady Julian) are a dirty mess. The water is the River Wensum, here part of the Broads National Park. Bike is a 2013 Moulton TSR8 for those interested in such things. Pic © JAS 2022
