Digby C of E School 1940's garden. We were chosen by Miracle Gro to enter a competition to grow flowers and vegetables for their 1940s Learning Journey garden at the Chelsea Flower Show.
We were given varieties of seeds that were grown from the 1940s era along with a list of plants we could try to resource. John Clowes and Jane Hartley visited the school on Wednesday and were totally thrilled with the garden and al the plants we have grown. Several of our props, including the utility shelving unit which we designed, have been chosen to go on display at Chelsea. Judging of the plants takes place next week. We have our fingers crossed!!
The gardening club decided they wanted to develop their own 1940s garden. It is split into four sections, a herb garden, a display area with containers from the era, a vegetable patch with Doris the Land Army scarecrow and a bomb site with an unexploded bomb!
We have included lots of work from the curriculum too with the Lest We Forget topic, with the children dressing up as evacuees, holding our own WW2 museum, cooking activities and a trip to RAF Digby's wartime control room. It has been a fantastic project the children have totally enjoyed being part of.
