The National Trust owned beach of Gunwalloe sits at the base of the Lizard Peninsula. The beach consists of a stretch of golden sand backed by gently sloping grassy dunes.

Tucked away at the northern end is the church of St Winwaloe. Named after the early Breton missionary, it is unlike most churches in that the squat little bell tower is actually separate from the main church. The church is where the southern cove of the two that make up Gunwalloe beach gets its name. The second is known as Dollar Cove as there is reputed to be lost Spanish treasure there.

Gunwalloe sits outside the shelter of Mounts Bay and is quite exposed to the Atlantic swells. In fact, the little church was originally known as the Church of the Storms.

In order to capture the incoming storm, I had to stand with my back to the church. The building at the end of the headland was originally the Poldhu Hotel, built to house the workers at Matrconi’s wireless station in Poldhu Cove, around the headland. It is currently a care home.
