air conditioners in korea are very convenient and not loud like ones in the us. if you buy a really nice one, they're silent. and they look like pretty decorative items, instead of crappy loud boxes in your window. no one has central air because of the heating system, but the portable ones are better, anyway, since a lot of people move around.
