Surrounding the central stupa at Kuthodaw Pagoda are 729 pavilions, each containing a marble tablet inscribed on the front and back with a page of text from the Tripitaka (the Buddhist canon of scriptures) making this ‘the world’s largest book.’ A 730th pavilion records how all this came into being. The pavilions were opened to the public on 4 May 1868.
