NATO COMMUNICATION FACILITY, BALADO
The former RAF airfield at Balado Bridge, near Kinross, was opened in March 1943 as a satellite to Grangemouth as part of 81 Group. A fighter Operational Conversion Unit was based here until mid 1944, atfter which the site was aquired by the War Department. Ex-Fleet Air Arm aircraft were scrapped here. The layout of the two concrete runways and perimeter track is still clearly visible, as is the control tower, between the perimeter track and the runway to the left. The site nowpartly used by a chicken farm, whose battery houses can be seen occupying most of the runways, while the area in the upper left is used by Balado Activity Centre for a variety of events, including the annual 'T In The Park' music festival, the biggest live music event in Scotland. The RAF still operate a NATO communication facility at Balado, from the 'Golf Ball' structure.
