Stranger 64 of 100: Raquela

Wow it has been a LONG time since I have photographed a stranger. The project has kind of put on pause because my wife and I welcomed a baby girl and the the work from my PhD has really ramped up. I will be defending and graduating in a few months and moving to Australia! Least to say it felt really good to get out and ask a stranger to photograph them.

Meet Raquela, a kind, young and talkative stranger that I met while I was traveling in New Mexico for my research. I want to point out that Raquel is the first stranger that I have photographed with my iPhone and I almost didn’t ask because I didn’t have my good camera. I had brought my DSLR with my 50mm 1.8 but forgot a memory card and couldn’t find the charger. I figured as soon as I bought the memory card, the battery would die. So I decided to shoot with my iPhone while I traveled this week. The stranger project was fresh on my mind after explaining it to a few of my colleges, but actually photographing a stranger was a long shot without my camera. Raquela, was working where we ate everyday and she always greeted me with a smile and cheerful hello. We got to talking and I explained why I was in New Mexico. Over three mornings of conversations she told me about all the places she has been and how much she loved to travel. So on my last day in New Mexico, I figure I would ask, despite only having my iPhone— I am glad that I did! She agreed and I was able to snap this shot while she was on break. Since we couldn’t wonder far, I tried to find some good light using the light colored building to catch some light in her eyes (since I didn’t have my reflector). I had to get alarming close with the built in 4 mm on the iPhone. When I say “alarming” I mean I was within a foot of her nose! Luckily Raquela was still able to remain relaxed despite having me in such close proximity. Since I had to get so close it also killed the fill light I was getting from the building because I cast a big shadow. Nonetheless, Raquela was a great sport and I think the portrait turned out great!

Raquela thank you for taking the time out of your day to be friendly and welcoming and for letting me take your portrait for my 100 Strangers Project!
