Coal Post
Coal posts such as this one, located in Hertfordshire, were erected during the mid-Victorian era, under the London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act, 1861.
They mark the boundary, approx 15 miles from the centre of London, at which duty had to be paid on imported coal. This duty was abolished in 1890, but most of the 200+ boundary posts remain in place to this day, and are regularly maintained & painted.
