Ely ceiling

Ely Cathedral (full name: the Cathedral church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely) dates from the 11th century, when building began soon after the Norman conquest of England.

The magnificent nave ceiling was restored and painted during the Victorian era, and displays the sacred history of mankind, from the creation to Jesus in final glory. There are 12 panels in total, the last four being shown here, each depicting a Biblical scene:-

1. The creation of man

2. The fall of man in the Garden of Eden

3. Noah and the great flood

4. Abraham and Isaac

5. Jacob's dream

6. The marriage of Ruth

7. The branch (or rod) from Jesse

8. king David

9. The annunciation

10. The Nativity

11. The adoration of the Magi and the shepherds

12. Christ in heavenly glory
