The Grand Opening
This Epiphyllum flower was just opening the morning when I brought it inside to photograph, and avoid distracting background elements. The flower was not fully opened, but I decided to exploit it anyway. They only bloom once a year, and for a very short period of time.
Strobist info: I wanted to backlight the flower while putting some light on the stem, and also to spotlight the center of the flower. I did the backlighting, and lighting of the stem, by placing a YN560-II in a 24 inch softbox behind the flower camera left at 11 o'clock. I put a YN560 in a Rogue grid in front of the plant, at 6 o'clock for the spotlighting (which also cast some shadows). Both strobes, in manual mode were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. Because the flower is pink and red I shot in Raw, because I've found that I can't get accurate reds if I shoot jpegs.
Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description for that set, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash, and the equipment that I use.

Over the years, I've taken quite a few "Epi" pictures, and they're in my Epiphyllum Flowers album, if you like that sort of thing.
