Backlit Orchid Petals

This orchid plant that I've been exploiting lately was sitting on a kitchen counter this morning with light streaming in through a window behind it. I place a black disk behind it to that it wouldn't block the light, but would provide a black background, and then used a hand mirror in front of the flower to bounce a little light back on a few areas near the bottom of the plant (including the unopened bud). It's hard to beat natural light when it's positioned where you want.

Other plants, flowers, or fruit that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description for that set, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422
