Marian Hulme Oliphant was born 18 August 1858 in New Jersey, the daughter of attorney Joseph Burr Oliphant (29 August 1829 - 1862) and Sarah Maria Hulme (1829-1866); the couple would have two daughters--Louisa and Marian. The family was living in Northampton, New Jersey in 1860, where Joseph was an attorney; the family had real estate valued at $5,000 and a personal estate of $2,000. After being orphaned, the two sisters went to live with their grandfather James Hulme (born circa 1802), a miller, in Northampton circa 1866. Marian graduated from Bordentown Female College. Neither Louisa nor Marian would marry, and from at 1895 through 1920 they lived together in Lambertville, New Jersey, with a single cousin, Caroline. Marian H. Oliphant would pass away on 16 January 1938.
