This is what is left of the slate mining industry in Northern Wales. These are actually the waste dumps accumulated over a period of nearly two centuries. However, the slate content in these waste dumps is quite high -- so what can be seen in this photograph is essentially nothing but slate with slight impurities. Wales used to be famous for its high quality slate, which was shipped to places all over the world.
