Closer view of the 59th St. Bridge. Roosevelt Island in the background. Current's especially strong in here because Roosevelt squeezes the river down into two narrow channels.

This stretch, up to Hell Gate at the northern end of Roosevelt Island, is therefore kind of the crux of a circumnavigation - flood switches to ebb with startling speed and if you miss the window, you're going to have a hard time. Steve had started our trip on the early side - go through too soon and you'll be fighting the current on the Harlem, but that's not too bad.
