Border crossing

For reasons of personal safety I decided not to take photo's at the border with Iran, where the road suddenly stops for a huge and firm gate. There is one large very firm gate of the Turks and the other very firm gate is from Iran. Between the gates there are some office buildings of police, custums and army. Nearly every one is armed here. I am glad they were so kind to tell me the way to the Çukuru Meteor Crater, although they looked at me strangely: what's this Dutch guy doing here?

The queue of waiting lorries for the Iranian border is actually more impressive than the meteorite crater. At least 1,5 kilometers of trucks waiting in double rows! There is no shadow (the temperature that day was far over 30 degrees C), only the burning sun and many hours or even days of waiting....

Did you know the Turks are allowed to smuggle 500 litres of petrol from Iran to Turkey each time they pass the border?

When you keep in mind the extremely low prices of petrol in Iran and the Western Europe prices in Turkey you can imagine this "legal smuggling" is a lucrative business.

Photo taken appr. 500 meters from the border.

Eastern Turkey.
