His notation means that you start with the activity and then do the sign for "I like." The two arches above the word subject indicate that it is important to raise your eyebrows when signing the activity. Facial expressions, including eyebrow placement is an important part of ASL. Jim is able to write on the blackboard because the written language for the Deaf community is English.
