1959 - "Mr G" was the first Okapi born in a US zoo - look at the size diffence betw the calf and the giraffe - Oh, btw, the Okapi is related to the Giraffe - just does not have the long neck as it is native to the forest areas in Africa. This species was not discovered by scientists until the early 1900's.
1961 - the original Seven Seas dolphinarium opens (since has been replaced with a new dolphinarium) first INLAND dolphinarium in the country
1962 - Olga walrus arrives
True Story
I remember this beauty from my visits to the zoo. Olga was a zoo favorite - I remember the day a man was teasing her in front of a big crowd, and I thought to myself "how rude" and wanted to say something to him (at my younger age back then) when all of a sudden Olga took aim and spit water right in his face!! The crowd cheered and boy did that man look like an ass........ p.s. he didn't say a word....... and he was soaking wet :-) I love animals..........
