The Royal Gala
LaVern had sent a discreet message to Grace and Sabrina's rundown hotel, she thought it was best that the 3 girls not be seen together in public. The note was an invitation to the Royal Music Gala, Lavern was performing and thought it would be a good first offical engagement for the "lady in lace". Grace didn't have too much to worry about when they discussed what to wear, she was forever a nurse now as long as she was at Sabrina's side, but Sabrina was a bit more worried about costuming. Truth be told the girl's grand plan seemed fail proof initially, but the girls were running low on jewelry to pawn for hotel and food money. Grace was also learning that manners and connections went a long way, but didn't take you to the end of the road, she had not, however, shared this with Sabrina, Sabrina needed as much confidence as possible. The duo were losing weight, their clothes were stiff from being washed in the sink, Grace brushed and brushed Sabrina's hair, but she just couldn't get that healthy gloss like the girls in the park under the parasols.
As Grace and Sabrina snuck into their assigned seating at the gala, Grace pointed in a hushed whisper at the elegant illustration on the cover of the program, it was a graceful portrait of the program's star Alexandrina Akhmatova surrounded by a lush oval of flowers and greenery. As the two girls excitedly flipped through the program, they couldn't have known they were being watched, but they were.
Vespa slowly crossed her leg, the heavy lengths of beading on her black gown sliding back on her thigh as she did so. Vespa unfolded her opera glasses with a cold "clink" and held them up to her calculating eyes. Vespa had expected to spend the performance scrutinizing this "fraud in lace", she was sure she could gather enough information just by looking at this woman to blackmail her into a story. But for once Vespa was taken by surprise, for when she gazed through her gold rimmed venetian glass opera glasses, she saw the aforementioned "lady" but she saw someone she recognized quite well next to her. Vespa knew the girl from New York, she couldn't bring her name to mind, but Vespa knew her from multiple press conferences, always sniffing around in the back, she was from some no name newspaper. Now Vespa was REALLY intrigued, did the lady in lace realize her "nurse" was a reporter? Were they running a scam together? And how was a simple cub reporter without means all the way in London?
The lights dimmed and Vespa slowly turned her glasses to the lithe figure playing Juliet on stage.
