After decades of importation of slaves (500.000) from Africa to work the tobacco, cocoa, coffee and sugarcane plantations, and the abolition of slavery in 1880, there was a big inflow from chinese workers to maintain the status from Cuba as worldwide's nr 1 sugarproducent.
There was a time that the "Barrio Chino" had the largest chinese population in Latin America, but after the revolution most of the chinese got back to their country. Only a few restaurants with so called "chinese food" remain.
