US Gun Ownership, 1973-2010
US Gun ownership (in percentage of households with at least one firearm) has been trending downward since roughly 1977. The gap between the two lines signifies non-response to the question; we don't know whether those people had guns or not.
Notice that there is not data for every year. This data comes from occasional polls, and the polls were conducted in various years until they settled on a pattern of conducting them in every even-numbered year. The 2012 results have not yet been released. The poll data can be retrieved here:
