Mining Memorial
The very identity of the South Wales valleys changed forever during the days when coal was mined deep beneath it's surface in 1970's.
Many villages and towns sprang from nowhere thanks to the mining industry which gave the whole nation a rich and prosperous future. The opening of new mines on almost a daily basis lead to an employment boom such as not only Wales but the rest of Great Britain had never seen before. People came from far and wide to risk lives deep underground in deadly conditions.
Many of us who are from the South Wales valleys will have, I'm sure, had a relative who spent their lives in the search for coacl and who may even have lost their lives in doing so.
The above photo was taken on the 28/12/2013 in a small town called Bargoed in South Wales. It was one of the many places that came to be because of the mines. This recently errected monument honours the miners who built the town and who's memory will live on forever in the spirit of the community.
The inscription on the steps reads;
'With Pride,
Remember Them,
For Us,
A Future,
They Built,
Remember the Miners'.
A fitting tribute, to a time we must never forget.
