Spindle

The orange berries are toxic to humans and other mammals. The wood was used to make spindles for spinning wool and bobbins for lace-making Whittled into a sharp point it was used for skewers.hence one of its' names - prickwood, Birds eat the berries. Robins adopt bushes as a Winter resource. A nesting site for black bean aphids it is, unwelcome in gardens but popular with ladybirds which feed on them.
