sl027 200BC till about mid 20th century - elephants have been 'traded'. today between 2,000 to 3,500 remain in S.L.

Lankan elephant was greatly prized for superior demeanor, intellect and in times of war: bravery and brawn.

this selection process (removal of biggest + best) could explain why species is a lot smaller, today. (only 9% are tuskers)

creature-exchanges, between Burma and India were common. S.L. animals would fetch double to 4 times the $price of its 'cousins'

since early 20th century S.L.s elephant population has reduced by 65%. (many thanks due to killing-spree, initiated by colonial Brit hunters)

(once again) killing one, is punishable by death - currently on average 6% are 'lost' per year.

Kandy's B.T.r. Temple holds the most magnificent (+largest) procession of elephants (Perahera) july/aug.

allocated tickets for each day (approx US$95) are sold for different partitions lining the route.
